Your Guide to the Online Buying Cycle

Every online purchase starts long before someone clicks “Buy Now”. Customers go through a series of stages: realising they need something, researching their options, comparing them and, finally, making a decision.

This process is known as the online buying cycle. Understanding it helps you make sure your business is there at every step, guiding potential customers towards choosing you.

To explain how it works, let’s follow someone looking for a personalised birthday cake.

Stage 1: Awareness – Help Customers Find You

Every purchase starts with a need. In our example, someone wants a special cake for a birthday, so they turn to Google and search for something like “custom birthday cakes”.

This is your first opportunity. If your website doesn’t appear in those search results, the customer won’t know your business exists.

Rather than guessing what people search for, use keyword research. Tools such as Google Keyword Planner and Google Search Console show you the actual words and phrases people use to find businesses like yours. Make sure those terms are on the relevant pages of your website.

Search isn’t the only way people become aware of businesses. Social media, online ads, your Google Business Profile and word of mouth all help put your business in front of potential customers.

Stage 2: Research – Be Part of Their Search

Once someone has seen their options, they start narrowing them down. Our cake buyer looks through the results and realises they want something more specific: a novelty birthday cake shaped like their child’s favourite toy.

Their searches become more refined, such as “novelty birthday cake design” or “unicorn birthday cake near me”. These are known as long-tail keywords. They’re more specific, less competitive and often used by people who are closer to buying.

Make sure your website covers these more detailed searches as well as the broader ones. A dedicated page for novelty cakes, a gallery of past designs and blog posts such as “10 Novelty Birthday Cake Ideas for Kids” all help your business appear as customers’ searches become more specific.

Stage 3: Comparison – Make Your Website the Best Place to Decide

With their search refined, the customer starts comparing their options. This is where your website can really stand out.

Give them everything they need to make a decision, so they don’t have to look anywhere else. For our cake example, that would include:

  • Clear descriptions of the cakes and personalisation options available
  • Prices, or at least a guide to how much a cake will cost
  • Timescales, such as how much notice you need for an order
  • Photos of real cakes you’ve made
  • Reviews and testimonials from happy customers
  • FAQs that answer common questions about flavours, dietary requirements, delivery and collection

The more helpful and complete your information is, the more likely customers are to choose you over a competitor whose website leaves them with unanswered questions.

Stage 4: Purchase – Make It Easy to Buy

By now, you’ve attracted the customer to your website, given them the information they need and earned their trust. The last thing you want is to lose them at the final hurdle.

Make buying or ordering as simple as possible:

  • Use clear calls to action, such as “Order Your Cake” or “Get a Quote”
  • Keep forms and checkouts short and easy to complete
  • Offer a range of payment options, including cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Show delivery or collection costs upfront, so there are no surprises
  • Display trust signals, such as secure checkout badges and reviews, near the point of purchase

Stage 5: After the Purchase – Turn Customers Into Regulars

The buying cycle doesn’t end when someone makes a purchase. A happy customer can become a repeat customer and recommend you to others.

Send a thank-you email, ask for a review, and invite them to join your mailing list for future offers. Our cake customer might need another cake for the next birthday, and you want your business to be the first one they think of.

Be There at Every Stage

When your website supports customers at every stage of the buying cycle, helping them find you, research their options, compare and buy, you’ll turn far more visitors into customers and customers into loyal fans.
